Easy to use, high performance and portable
The Pen-Strobe is simple to use, with
its micro-controller design and just two buttons to control the increment,
sweep, memory, reset and on/off functions. The instrument has a high resolution
of 0.12Hz increments and a very wide revolving frequency range of 2Hz to 2kHz.
The frequency range and accuracy make this a very high performance instrument.
It also includes a bright flashlight mode.
Housed in a very small package similar
to a laser pointer, the Pen-Strobe is powered by two standard AAA 1.5V
batteries. The Pen-Strobe comes with batteries in a black instrument case with a
foam insert for protection during shipping and for storage. Its small, portable
size and power source allow you to take the stroboscope anywhere.
The Pen-Strobe is mainly used to study
motion, not for absolute measurements since it has no frequency or RPM/FPM
read-out. An optical sensor/tachometer can be used to measure the blink rate of
the Pen-Strobe. The Pen-Strobe includes a memory function which stores the
latest setting for later retrieval or measurement.
A few examples of applications:
- Study motion and resonance's of loudspeaker
components such as cones, surrounds, spiders, litz wires etc.
- Analyze panel vibrations and cone breakup modes
with the use of surface indicating materials, i.e. talc or cork.
- The wide frequency range up to 2kHz and the high
resolution allow even tweeter motions to be observed.
- Test if systems, multiple loudspeaker drivers or
arrays are in phase.
- High speed balance or synchronization of
reciprocating or rotating parts.
- Production and installation quality control and
- Portable sales tool to show customers the
performance of your components, products or installations.
- Other applications include vibration analysis of
electronic components on printed circuit boards and PCB panels.
The Pen-Strobe's two buttons control all
Press both buttons down at the same
time for more than one second, and the stroboscope toggles on or off. When the
instrument is on, a short press of a button, less than a second, steps one unit
(0.12Hz) up or down at a time. A button held down for more than one second
sweeps automatically up or down over the revolving frequency range while the
button is pressed.
When the Pen-Strobe is turned off, the
memory function stores the latest setting and it goes into a sleep mode with
very little current draw. The Pen-Strobe returns to the stored setting when it
is turned on again. To reset the Pen-Strobe to the lowest frequency setting
(2Hz), the two buttons are held down for more than three seconds when turning on

Insert the batteries
Unscrew the end cap of the Pen-Strobe and insert the batteries as
shown in the figure below. Screw the end cap back on.
When the Pen-Strobe does not turn on (only blinks dimly a few times),
replace the batteries. The Pen-Strobe uses two standard 1.5V AAA
(LR03) alkaline batteries. To replace batteries, unscrew the end cap
of the Pen-Strobe and remove the batteries. Insert the new batteries
as shown in the figure above and screw the end cap back on.
How to hold the
Hold the Pen-Strobe like a pencil,
between your thumb and
forefinger, with the light
pointing away from you.
Use your forefinger to
press the buttons.
The button closest to the light is the "up" button and the
button farthest from the light is the "down" button. See

Pen-Strobe ON or OFF
To turn the Pen-Strobe on or off, press both buttons at the same time
for more than one second until the light turns on or off, and then
release the buttons. When you turn the Pen-Strobe back on, it will
return to the latest setting.
Note the automatic power off
feature after 25 minutes if no keys have been pressed.
How to reset the
Pen-Strobe to 2Hz
To reset the Pen-Strobe to its lowest frequency setting (2Hz),
continue to hold both buttons down after you have turned on the
Pen-Strobe, until the blink rate changes to 2Hz, and then release the
buttons. If you continue to hold both buttons down, the Pen-Strobe
will cycle off and on at this setting (2Hz).
Using the Pen-Strobe
Change the blinking
Pressing the buttons on the Pen-Strobe causes the blinking rate
(frequency) to increase or decrease. The "up" button will
increase the blinking rate, the "down" button will decrease
the blinking rate.
One frequency step at a time
Press the "up" or "down" button for less than a
second to step up or down one frequency unit (0.12 - 0.24Hz).
Automatic sweep of
Hold the "up" or "down" button down continuously
to sweep up or down in frequency range. Release the button to stop at

swept through the entire frequency range, you will reach flashlight
mode and then the cycle will repeat.
To make the Pen-Strobe shine a brighter light (flashlight), press the
"down" button once for less than a second after you have
reset the Pen-Strobe. The flashlight mode marks the point in the
frequency range between the highest and lowest frequencies.

Care of the
The Pen-Strobe is not waterproof. Do not use or store the Pen-Strobe
under wet conditions. Remove batteries from instrument if stored for a
longer period (6 months or more) to avoid battery leakage problems.

materials or workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the
original purchase date. This warranty does not cover product subjected
to abuse, misuse, neglect or accidental damage. Removal of the
serialized label or any modifications to the product voids this

warranty period, your MLS Instruments product will be either repaired
or replaced with a reconditioned comparable unit at MLS Instruments
option when the product is returned, postage prepaid, to MLS
Instruments. The repaired or replacement unit will be in warranty for
the remainder of the original warranty period or for six months,
